A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
